MBD Medical, LLC, formed in 2008, is a private and innovative medical device company with roots in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania.
MBD’s mission embraces the passion and values of its co-founders, Thomas D. Meade, M.D. and James D. Ralph, both of whom are dedicated to the creation and development of products which contribute to better surgical outcomes, speed patient recovery and improve the quality of patients’ lives today.
Our self-contouring Clavicle fixation system, which is patented and was given FDA clearance, is considered a trans-formative surgical solution to healing fractured bones. The heart of MBD’s system is its unique bone plate that conforms to the contour of an irregularly shaped bone such as the clavicle. Our system allows for simpler and faster operative fixation which benefits patients, surgeons and hospitals.
Thomas D. Meade, M.D. (Co-Founder & Medical Adviser)
Dr. Meade is one of the leading orthopedic surgeons in the country and a recognized expert in knee surgery and the surgical treatment of displaced clavicle fractures. He is known for his contributions toward improvements in a patient’s quality of life. He helped design and develop a revolutionary brace for knee replacements, as well as, surgical instruments for knee implants and ligament reconstruction.
Dr. Meade is a sports enthusiast and avid cyclist with links to the Allentown Velodrome. Several years ago, he severely fractured his clavicle in a biking accident. And, after a few failed attempts to have his clavicle surgically repaired, Dr. Meade began his quest for a plating system that would be easy for surgeons to implant and allow the patient to return to normal activities within days. After presenting his ideas to James Ralph and the engineering team at BioDynamics, Dr. Meade’s innovative concept was combined with their design expertise resulting in a self- contouring fixation system, and the subsequent formation of MBD Medical.
Dr. Meade graduated from Penn State University with High Distinction and the Jefferson Medical College. He completed his orthopedic residency at Thomas Jefferson College. Presently, in addition to working at Coordinated Health in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Dr. Meade is President and Senior Managing Partner of an orthopedic practice.
James D. Ralph (Co-Founder & Vice President of Engineering)
Jim’s thirty plus years of experience in product development and manufacturing have provided him with a broad perspective and unique opportunity to design medical implants that enhance the quality of life. In the beginning of his career, Jim was involved in government manufacturing projects in the areas of spine, hip, trauma and general surgery for major medical device houses, including Mitek, Orthomet, Codman and Surgical Dynamics.
In 1995, Jim assumed the position of Director of Engineering and R & D with Fastenetix, a company established and managed by him and two partners. While there, Jim developed a number of designs that were sold or licensed to medical companies, including an artificial disk for the spine called the FlexiCore lumbar artificial disk. Fastenetix later created SpineCore, a separate company, to market the FlexiCore disk as well as its CerviCore cervical disk. SpineCore was acquired by Stryker Corporation for a total of $360 million in cash and royalty payments.
Following the Stryker acquisition, Jim’s focus has been next generation medical implants that more closely mimic the body’s natural composition and motion and are geared toward improving patient comfort and function. It was with this goal in mind that Jim formed BioDynamics, and it was his leadership there combined with Dr. Meade’s concept for a new and improved plating system that resulted in their partnership and the creation of MBD Medical.
Jim has been the named inventor in over 100 patents in the areas of orthopedic surgery, spine, hip, trauma and tooling.
